'Victorious Voices' with Carlotta Hey

'Victorious Voices' with Carlotta Hey

Carlotta Hey shares her emotional reaction to winning the Fida Excellence in Live Events Award 2025 with her stunning Jean Cocteau illustration, along with the inspiration behind her award-winning piece, her hopes to inspire other emerging artists, and what’s next in her extraordinary creative journey.

Is being an artist your full-time profession or more of a personal passion?

Art is definitely my full-time job, I used to work as a full-time fashion designer and product developer for various Australian brands, but since working freelance, I have a bit more time to prioritise my love for illustrating.

Have you entered the Fida Awards before, and if so how many times?

Yes. I have joined the FIDA community in 2023 and since then I have been participating in the awards (and was lucky enough to be shortlisted each time).

How did you feel when you found out and what do you hope to gain by winning?

Winning the award for my illustration was an incredible experience!! When I received the news, it was early morning here in Australia and I I felt completely overwhelmed (for days actually!)
It is not only a moment of recognition for my artistic journey, but also for my dedication that I have put into my illustration work over the last 2 years.
This award represents definitely more than just a ‘trophy’, I really would like to use this as a springboard to experiment further with my techniques and themes, pushing myself to innovate and grow as an artist.
I also hope this award will help me elevate my profile within the fashion and art
communities, allowing me to connect with a broader audience…
I also want my journey and this achievement to inspire other emerging artists, I hope to encourage others to pursue their passion.

What does this recognition mean to you as an artist?

Winning this award holds significant meaning to me, both personally and professionally.
It is a reassurance that my efforts are valued and have not gone unnoticed.
Knowing that my work has been recognised and appreciated by others is incredibly
motivating! It definitely encourages me to push my boundaries and take risks in my artistic expression.
On a personal level, this recognition brings a sense of fulfilment and joy. It is a reminder whyI started this journey with fashion illustration in the first place - the ability to convey emotions, tell stories and connect with others through art.

Can you share what inspired the winning piece? Tell us about your process/what mediums you used?

This illustration was a commission for ‘The Calligraphy Co' and its client 'Cartier', in celebration of the 100 year anniversary for the Cartier Trinity ring.
The brief was a black and white illustration of Jean Cocteau, a French poet and playwright. For me it was important that the illustration would reflect both Jean Cocteau’s artistic spirit and the luxury associated with Cartier.
I started with a detailed pencil sketch and added charcoal for depth and dimension.

Is there anything you would like people to know about you and your work?

Absolutely! The reason why I do what I do, is because I believe that every illustration has the power to convey emotions. To spark a conversation. To reflect. And to get you thinking. I must admit, I probably prefer to draw about my thoughts and emotions rather than talk…
The HB pencil has always been my best friend ;) I have a deep appreciation for traditional techniques, particularly in charcoal and pencil.
I am in awe of watercolour, but the fact that I can’t really control its flow frightens me a bit. I am also experimenting with Procreate at the moment, but only as a final touch up...too old school and romantic to move away from pen and paper.

Will this recognition influence the themes or direction of your work?

Yes, this recognition will undoubtedly influence my work moving forward. Receiving this award instils a sense of confidence in my abilities as an artist. This newfound confidence will definitely encourage me to explore more ambitious themes and techniques in my illustrations. I feel more ‘empowered’ to experiment :-)

What advice would you give to other artists hoping to achieve similar recognition?
Stay true to your vision, authenticity is the key. Develop your unique voice and style, and don’t be afraid to express your individuality through your work…
Experiment with different techniques and styles, the more you explore, the more you will discover what resonates with you (and your audience). Don’t be afraid.
Constructive feedback can be incredible, it can lead to unexpected breakthroughs.
And don’t hesitate to submit your works to awards and exhibitions. Each submission is a chance to gain visibility and recognition, even if you don’t win. The process itself can be a great learning experience (trust me, I know).

Is there someone you would like to dedicate this award to?
This winning illustration holds a special place in my heart, not only because of its purpose but also because of its memories. I sketched this illustration while on a trip to Europe to spend time with my family. It literally all came together on the kitchen table…A memory I will cherish forever!
I would like to dedicate this award to my mother, whose support and encouragement have been unwavering. Her belief in me is unmatched.
She has helped me to find confidence in my art.
Danke Mama ♥
